How to upload a video from my camcorder to sites like Youtube and Stage6?

I went out with the family and recorded the day on a camcorder that takes mini-discs.
What I wanna know is, how do I upload the contents of this mini-disc onto video sharing websites like Youtube or Stage6?
Well I know how to upload it once it is a viewable file on the computer (an .avi file for example) but how do you make the file into something like a .avi?

When i connect my camcorder to my computer, nothing opens on my computer. How do i get the film onto the comp?

What kind of a good, cheap camcorder is good for filming skateboarding?
