Yo, I am curious as to if this camcorder can shoot with progressive scan> I realize MiniDV
doesnt support it, but if you shoot and capture simultaneously so it goes directly to the computer and not through the tape, can you get 1080p? Thanks.
Yes it does, camera is also plug-in mic capable. Like most camcorders it’s a reasonable stereo electret condensor omni directional mic – not pro quality, and susceptible to wind and cam motor noises in quiet environs.
does the camera have a built in microphone?
if so how well does it work?
I’m PAL, so the PF25 simplifies things on our 25fps/50Hz PAL video. To burn progressive PF25 footage I use DVD Studio Pro, whilst it supports 24 or 25 fps files it uses frame doubling to conform to the HD DVD spec, so DVD can be 59.94p or 50p for PAL.
Bang for buck for quality is outstanding, although it mightn’t teach you as much about camera handling as, say an XL2. It’s arduous to fully control the shutter for example.
very, very good review.
How can I export my 24p footages to dvd? Have you tried burning this project to DVD? If so did you have to convert it to 29.976 with a pull down? What’s the point of shooting in 24p if you have to convert it back to 60i in order to play it on a ntsc interlaced tv? But does it still have that film look? Let me know thanks.
“a poor mans Xh-A1″ ahhaha great job tho very informative…as a 16 year old wanting to join the film industry as a carreer in the future do u beilive this camera would be a good choice for short films ect? considering i dont have a whole lot of money this seems to be the logical choice for me.
pretty much any but stick with one brand. For critical projects I use Sony Digital HD Video DVM63
what types of minidv tapes should be used with this camera?
Thanks very much for making this video – i am purhcasing a new camcorder and this was very informative and provided all the info i wanted. Thanks a lot bro
Ok, so from my experience with still photography I take it that the scan distorts vertical lines when panning fast? If so I need to look into that, almost all I shoot is fast moving (check my kite vids on my channel). Thanks for the tip, and glad I asked, almost all demo footage I’ve seen has been sedate.
Well it’s sat in the bag for most of this year, as I’m doing more photography – about the only thing I notice is the rolling shutter issue for progressive video occasionally.
Helpful. Having had it for a while, how have your views developed?
any1 no how long does a HD camcoder last ?

Hi i am a film student and about to purchase this camera and if anyone can help me, i just bought a new dell computer with lots of space and ram but my question is when im editing in hd, can i keep the quality and burn to a normal dvd that would still play high quality. I know it would probably only let me burn a small amount of video but before i buy this camera i would like to know if its possible. and if anyone has tips. thank you
HV20 allows you to approach this in two ways:
1) shoot everything in HD for future proofing, then just set the firewire/ to DV (standard Def)
2) set the camera to record standard def either 4:3 DV or 16:9 DV.
First option gives you HDV tapes that you go back & edit if want in HD later on.
hi nice review mate….id like one of these, i was going to get the panasoinic NV-GS330 mini dv, as i dont yet have a HD tv or player…My question is can i still do my movies with this not in HD? and the software i use for editing is, ulead videostudio 11plus, visionlab pro, particle illusion, and sony vegas8 pro… i live in the uk so it would have to be PAL. LOOK FORWARD TO HEARING OFF YOU…..THANXS AGAIN…NICE JOB
oh, sorry i didn’t know they used that system in Australia, sorry ummm, mate? lol
HV20 is NTSC, HV20E is PAL – *my* unit is 625 lines 50Hz PAL as is the video system used in Australia.
Yeah I found out how to do it not 5 minutes after posting. You can lock it really quick by pressing the knobby down once, then up once while in P mode.
I have same CPU, monitor and printer as you monyx! lol
you said in the discription that is a PAL camcorder but it is NTSC
