Camcorder Bargains

I'm a first year teacher of a middle school vid production class with 11 iMAC's. 3 of them (g5's) tell me I don't have a device (camcorder) hooked up when I load FCE. I tried 3 different cameras, each of which are detected when I loaded Final Cut Express (same version, 3.5) on other g5's. I also tried switching out the firewire cable itself, but it makes no difference. Any ideas? Our tech doesn't "do" apple, so I'm kind of stuck...

I've also found some sort of 'card' with firewire compatibility, but as far as I can tell, my computer can't use it.
