Yes.. I know. The Canon Gl-1 is a ten year old camera. Blah blah blah. How many of you have access to a 3-Chip camera? Exactly. This blows ANY single-chip MiniDv camcorder out of the water. Plain and simple.

Even some of the single-chip HD cameras... well, let's not go there.

Getting excellent video out of it does require use of manual controls.

Settings here:

16:9 cropped.
Frame movie mode.
ND filter on.
75 shutter speed.
0dB gain.
C-Sharpness cranked to the far left: all the way down to zero.

The results of playing the original DV clip on a monitor at 1280x1024 resolution - effectivley 720p are quite impressive. For a decade-old camera.

Some of the shot is blown. This could not be avoided - try keeping the contrast range here on video, it's not going to work. The sky will always be somewhat bright-white if you want to keep the road visible. Film might handle that differently. However, the
range is still somewhat compressed -
because the image is not as bright as
it could be. This was to preserve some
of the fine-detail of the rain, which
was very much translucent on the road.
