With a dual function and dual storage camcorder, do you have to keep switching back and forth to which type of memory you want the image stored on, or switch back and forth between pic mode and video mode, or does the camera automatically do it?

I'm having a hard time deciding on my first digital camera...all those zr af 10 MP 2 MP 3X zoom and what not are so confusing!! I need a good camera to take clear and cripsy pictures and one that could zoom in on a far away object. I feel comfortable in a price ranging from 200-400 dollars...as long as it takes excellent quality pictures and is easy to use.
